I have bought the "The Real Thing - In Performance 1964-1981" DVD with the 1981 Belgium concert as bonus.
The setlist and arrangements are pretty similar to the "Live in Montreux 1980" DVD, but with a different band and shorter (50 min). More "honky cats" play with Marvin in this concert. In my opinion they pull it off quite well (great 80ies stylings...moustache power!!), proving that "white men can funk"
Funny thing : both on the "Live in Montreux 1980" and the "Live in Belgium 1981" DVD, the sax solo of the opener "Got to give it up" is a bit messed up : both times it seems the sound engineer forgot to turn up the mike.
All in all : it is not a must if you already have "Live in Montreux 1980" DVD, but also enjoyable for all aficionados of R&B soul & funk.
I just miss band credits, does anybody have info about this band??
The bass player looks like Rick James to me. I´m not a big Rick James expert. But I think in 1981 he was already an artist on his own so it´s unlikely he was sidelining sombody. Anybody has a clue who this guy is??
