Brother Turn on Sister in the cruel world lyrics
Permalink

On the Motown 40 program during the section with What's Going On there's are part when they are showing footage of Detroit, I believe, and Marvin sings "Brother turn on sister in this cruel, cruel world.  That's what's wrong with all the world today...".  Where is that from?  I can't find it anywhere.

Hi,

Can you describe the song more, like the ERA that it might be from ect. I feel like I would have heard that one somewhere, but just can't find it...

That's all I know to it.  I figure it might be an adlibbed part in a performance.  Seems like it's from 1971.  I love your avatar by the way.

Wow!  So this was on a soundtrack to Phenomenon.  Excellent.  I heard an exerpt of it on Amazon.  This is the song I'm talking about.  Pretty tempted to get the soundtrack just to hear the song.  I wonder why this wasn't on an album or maybe it was and I haven't looked hard enough.  Thanks so much!!!

Marvin possibly worked on this while working on the follow-up to What's Going On in 1972. He was gonna do another album full of socially-conscious work but after he felt it wasn't going to sell anymore is when he went into what became Let's Get It On (he actually was working on that one for a while but hadn't gotten to that title song yet). In fact, the other tracks included:

"You're the Man"

"The World Is Rated X"

"Where Are We Going?"

"Double Clutch"

"Piece of Clay"

Luckily you can hear "The World..." and "You're the Man" on his 1995 Anthology set. "Where Are We Going" was on "The Very Best of Marvin Gaye" (The UTV 2002 set) and "Double Clutch" and "Piece..." was on his "The Master" box set.

Great song. Very bluesy rock-soul.

Those lyrics are from the song "Pieces Of Clay" on the "Masters" collection which is a four disc set. I would call it a great collection but that would be an understatement. If you don't have it get it!
